“The Intercontinental Cup is part of a greater strategy. What this strategy indicates is that for the game to continue to grow, we need to give [new players] the ideal conditions and environment all over the world. We are now moving from local and national to continental and then the inevitable next step is to move from continental to intercontinental. The Intercontinental Cup is certainly a part of it and our aim is that over the next three to five years, it will grow into the world’s top club competition for basketball.

Asia remains a very unique continent because of the distances, different cultures, logistical problems, and the strength of domestic competitions. What we are exploring now in Asia is what we call a more regional competition. So, we have specific regions that are playing within themselves, and then the winners of these regional competitions go to the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. Once again, we do have a pyramid that highlights the importance of on-court results. Asia is growing on its interest in the game and for FIBA, it remains an important destination.”
