You’ve coached different generations (the 70s; 80s; 90s and now 00s). Having coached different generations, what are the differences you observe?
You are young and have no children. When you have children, you will understand that there are huge differences. I’ll give you an example: when my father / mother told me an important thing, I didn’t focus on how they said it to me, if they said “grrr” or if they said it well. When they opened their mouths, it was as if God opened his mouth. It was like that.
Now, when you talk to a 17-18 (or even 20) year-old, how you say things is much more important than what you say. If you can’t get him to listen to you – even if you say the right thing, the most functional, the most suitable thing for that guy – he won’t listen to you. I was used to it differently: when an adult who deserved my respect spoke, I never doubted. That’s it. Now you must find a way to make yourself heard. And you must learn to speak many different languages: it is not German, Turkish, Serbian… but the language that person wants to hear.
The value
I think the most important thing with young people today is to make them understand that you care. The situation is very complicated, because we live in a generation that has everything ready. This – the phone – gives you access to the whole world: you can order a pizza, you can buy a car or you can book a trip; you can tell a person “I love you”, you can tell a person “I hate you”. You have it all here. But this – the telephone – does not replace this – the head -. Making those who use modern life to understand this is not easy, it is very complicated. I don’t blame anyone: you need to have a lot of energy to look for and find ways to interact with this person.

Andrea Trinchieri: ”Every team is different”
Last season’s Partizan was one of the best defensive teams at EuroCup. How suitable do you think Bayern roster this season to set up such a defense?
I don’t want to replicate anything: every team is different. I believe that for a team like Bayern, defense is and will be fundamental; because in offense, you have to follow the talent of the players a bit and you don’t choose the talent of the players. In defense, it is about sacrifice you are willing to make. It will be a different defense than Partizan’s; I hope it will be equally effective, because Partizan’s [defense] was exceptional. It was also because we were able to put together many different components… but it is not comparable, everything is different. But I would be very disappointed if my team, Bayern, did not defend well or very well. Very disappointed.
