Interview: Kasım Ersoy, TrendBasket
Western Conference underdog Utah Jazz beat the Sacramento Kings 110-109 on Sunday in Golden 1 Center. Before the tip-off, Jazz’s French star Rudy Gobert answered TrendBasket’s questions on Cholet, being an idol in France and EuroBasket 2017.
Back in Europe, you’ve played for Cholet between the years of 2010 and 2013 under Erman Kunter. You’re one of those players produced by Cholet and making their way into the NBA. What can you say about the institution created by Cholet and Erman Kunter?
To me, Cholet is the best place to improve players in France. There are a few very good ones but I think Cholet formed most of the good players of today. It’s great to have a system that allows players to get better, to have a chance to go to the highest level (of basketball).
In the overtime win over Kings, Gobert scored 16 points, including a buzzer-beating tip-in, and recorded 24 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 block in 41 minutes of play.
You turned out to be one of the best French players just at the age of 24 and now, young people in France see you as an idol. Do you see yourself as an idol? Or do you just think you have a long way to go to become an idol to the youth?
I’m still young. Sometimes I realize I’m inspiring the kids. When I go back to my camp every summer, I’m realizing all the kids there are looking up to me. It makes me happy. It’s great.
Are you planning to join France Men’s Basketball National Team for EuroBasket 2017?
I don’t know yet. We’re going to talk to the Jazz, once the season is over. From there, we’ll see how it goes.
